Halloween day!

Today (Halloween) we are doing heaps of activities like drawing on mandarins. This is a video with me and jack the mandarin about the history of carving pumpkins.

If the video doesn't work, try this link.

I also made this piece of writing using the hollow woods cards:

-----------------------------------------------------------------
One spooky night in the depths of the forest, there lived a knight and a girl. They were walking down a path and they meet each other at an intersection. They both decided to go down a spooky track that leads them to a black, rusty almost broken gate that looked like the entrance of a cemetery. They slowly enter. They see a shadow, but when they got closer… It was the grim REAPER! They run out of the gates to get to the knight’s horse and sword all caught up in spiky vines.

When they were riding away they found a treasure chest so they stop and take a look at it… It was full of candy and weirdly enough, garden gnomes. When they went back to their house they found a goblin staring at them so they give him a garden gnome then he runs back to his cave and puts the garden gnome into his collection of gnomes. Then they sat down, chowed down their candies, and got headaches.

In our Halloween themed morning I also drew this Jack o' lantern.

Heroes

This week we have a new topic in our class about heroes that have left a legacy and/or have changed the world for the better, eg: Kate Shepard who was the first woman to vote in New Zealand. Here is my slide about what we are doing (I only did the last slide I didn't do the whole thing).

Figure it out

This week I have made another figure it out about adding fractions and comparing fractions I have made a google doc about it.

Figure it out: Getting to fractions

1 - The Hohepa and McLean families are both driving from Morrinsville to Whakatane. Both the McLean and Hohepa family cars’ are one 20th of the journey apart (8 km). The way I did this was by simplifying the fraction from 120 to 12 and after that I found out that 8 was a key number in this equation being 8 x 15 = 120 and 8 x 16 = 128 and the whole journey is 8 x 20 = 160.

2 - Kim, Tim and Vim go shares in a startup technology company. Kim puts up 2⁄5 of the money, Tim puts up one third and Vim puts up the rest. How much of the company should Vim own? Vim should own nothing because ⅖ + ⅓ = 1 whole so really Vim should own nothing!

Tech Wacky Wood

For tech in the start of this term I am in the wacky wood class and we get to choose what we are going to make out of driftwood, I have chosen to make coasters (like table mats for cups) because we do not have any at home. Here is my drawing with some ideas that I found (personally I like the one in the top middle).

Persuasive writing (AGAIN?)

This week our teacher set us the task of creating a persuasive piece of writing about our school athletics and whether it should be compulsory or not, here's mine.

Athletics: To be compulsory or not to be?

Today I am arguing whether athletics should be compulsory or not, I personally think that athletics should be done in all schools because if you have nothing to do this might be for you.

Fitness, as students we need to keep our fitness up so we can live a healthy life. If you become fit and you find that you like athletics then you will have a new hobby that you didn’t know about. Even if you don’t like athletics it is half a day of hanging out having a laugh with your friends in your age group.

Hobbies, If you are looking for a new hobby try athletics because if you haven’t tried it before you might have a new hobby on your hands. In athletics there are many different things to test a lot of different muscles so for example, if you have a lot of arm strength you might want to try discus or shot put or if you are fast you could go in the sprints no matter what it is, see if you like it because if you do you can train and maybe go professional.

Fresh air, I might sound like your parents a bit in this paragraph but, a lot of people are stuck on their devices so if you enjoy doing athletics it would be a good thing to keep you occupied away from your screen. This would be good for you if you feel your life revolves around devices it could become a habit for you because if it is a nice day you can go outside and practice, practice, practice.

In conclusion, I feel that all students should participate in athletics because it keeps you fit, it can give you something to do and it will get everyone off their Chromebooks to enjoy themselves and try something new, and who knows what will happen!

Figure it out | Maths

This week I was doing a figure it out for maths about a year eight class that were raising money for their school by selling chocolate dipped strawberries, I have worked it out in this paper.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Figure it out: A fair dip

What do you need to find out first?

You need to find out how many chocolate strawberries you are going to sell and then how many bags of chocolate you need to coat that many strawberries

10 cents for chocolate on ½ dozen strawberries

- $1.25 for ½ dozen strawberries

- 10 cents for origami box for strawberries

- Total: $1.45 for all the ingredients for one box

- The year eight class will be making a profit of 55 c per box.

They will need to sell around 125 boxes if they want to raise $250 for their school.
